Amazon India product title rules: a 75-character migration guide

Update non-media Amazon.in titles for the 75-character limit, use Item Highlights deliberately, and measure the change without losing catalogue accuracy.

Quick answer

From 27 July 2026, Amazon India requires product titles in non-media categories to be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces. Item Highlights provides another 125 characters for material or recommended-use details, while titles that remain too long may be updated gradually using Amazon's AI recommendation. Sellers should preserve product identity in the title, move secondary comparison details to Item Highlights, and review category-specific requirements before applying changes.

Amazon India's product-title change makes prioritisation more important than keyword density. A seller now has to keep the product unmistakable within a shorter title, move supporting comparison details into Item Highlights, and preserve the attributes buyers need to choose the correct variation.

Amazon's India seller announcement says the change took effect on 27 July 2026 for all categories except media. It also says titles that remain above the limit may be updated gradually to Amazon's AI recommendation, so reviewing important ASINs directly is safer than assuming the old title will remain unchanged: Amazon India product-title update.

What changed for Amazon India product titles

The current announcement establishes four operational rules:

  • non-media titles must be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces;
  • Item Highlights adds up to 125 characters for materials or recommended uses;
  • Amazon may gradually apply an AI-recommended title when an existing title exceeds the limit;
  • brand owners receive a review window for proposed changes in Review Listings Changes.

This newer rule is more specific than Amazon India's general listing page, which still displays a 200-character maximum for titles. That public page also says listings must follow Amazon style guides. Treat the current category rule, the fields visible in your account and any category-specific style guide as the working requirements; do not use the older 200-character statement as permission to ignore the 2026 update. See Amazon India's listing overview.

The title limit is not a reason to strip away information needed to identify the product. It is a reason to separate identity from supporting detail.

Decide what belongs in the 75-character title

Start with the facts that distinguish the exact product being offered. A practical order is:

  1. brand, when applicable;
  2. product type;
  3. one decisive model, material or functional attribute;
  4. size, quantity or variation detail when it prevents a wrong purchase.

The exact order should follow the category's current style guide. Remove promotional phrases, repeated synonyms and claims that cannot be verified. Do not force every search phrase into the title.

Use a constrained title worksheet

Create one row per child ASIN with these columns:

  • current title and character count;
  • brand and product type;
  • mandatory category attributes;
  • variation-specific details;
  • proposed title and character count;
  • proposed Item Highlights;
  • source record for each product claim;
  • review status and change date.

Count spaces and punctuation before submitting. Keep a copy of the accepted title so later catalogue changes can be compared with a known version.

Example structure

The following is illustrative, not a universal Amazon template:

Brand + product type + key material or feature + size or pack

A title for a school backpack, for example, may need the brand, product type, laptop size and colour if those details distinguish the child variation. A secondary use case or material explanation can move to Item Highlights when it is not required for identity. Verify the category rule before deciding whether colour belongs in the title or variation data.

Use Item Highlights for comparison details

Amazon describes Item Highlights as a searchable field displayed with titles in search results and on product detail pages. Use its 125 characters for details that help a buyer compare options but do not need to carry the product identity alone.

Good candidates include:

  • material or finish;
  • recommended use;
  • compatibility;
  • capacity or fit clarification;
  • a factual feature that answers a common comparison question.

Do not turn Item Highlights into a promotional slogan. Every claim should match the product, packaging, images and structured attributes. If a material, size or compatibility detail differs by variation, keep it aligned with that child ASIN.

Amazon's announcement says sellers can open Manage All Inventory, edit the listing and use View enhancements to inspect suggested titles and Item Highlights. Review the suggestion against the source catalogue; an AI-generated recommendation is a draft, not evidence that a product claim is correct.

Preserve discoverability without keyword stuffing

A shorter title does not mean abandoning shopper language. It means assigning each relevant term to the field where it helps without distorting the product identity.

Amazon Ads recommends using relevant, generic terms connected to features, materials, size and use, and says advertisers can inspect search-term reports for queries shoppers used. Its guide also advises against duplicating misspellings, capitalisation and plural variations unnecessarily: Amazon Ads product-detail-page guide.

Use that guidance in a controlled sequence:

  1. group actual query terms by the product attribute or use they represent;
  2. keep the clearest product-defining wording in the title;
  3. place comparison details in Item Highlights or bullets;
  4. use relevant backend search terms for remaining vocabulary where allowed;
  5. remove irrelevant terms and subjective claims such as "best."

Do not promise that adding a term will create a ranking gain. Search visibility also depends on catalogue accuracy, offer eligibility, competition and shopper behaviour. The defensible goal is a relevant, compliant listing whose fields describe the exact product consistently.

Recheck the rest of the detail page

A title migration can expose weaknesses elsewhere. Amazon India's listing overview identifies images, variations, bullet points and descriptions as core listing inputs. Amazon Ads separately recommends clear bullet points, useful descriptions and multiple high-quality images for advertised products.

Before publishing the new title, verify:

  • the main image shows the exact child variation;
  • additional images answer dimensions, scale, contents and use questions;
  • bullets contain factual features and limitations;
  • the description does not contradict the revised title;
  • size, colour, pack count and material attributes match the offer;
  • parent-child relationships group genuine variations only;
  • price, stock and fulfilment status are current.

Amazon Ads recommends a plain white background for product images, at least 1,000 pixels in height or width as a best practice for zoom, and at least three concise bullet points. Category-specific image and content rules may be stricter, so confirm the applicable style guide rather than treating broad recommendations as universal requirements.

Migrate high-value ASINs in controlled batches

Do not rewrite an entire catalogue without an audit trail. Start with ASINs that have meaningful traffic, advertising spend or revenue exposure, then use a small cohort to confirm the process.

For each batch:

  1. export or record the existing title, Item Highlights and key attributes;
  2. verify the proposed copy against packaging and product records;
  3. check the 75-character count, including spaces;
  4. apply the change through the current Seller Central workflow;
  5. review View Change History and any proposed listing changes;
  6. confirm the live detail page and variation selection;
  7. record the date and leave unrelated listing variables unchanged when practical.

Brand owners should review Amazon's proposed changes within the stated review window. Other sellers should still inspect change history because a shared product detail page can receive contributions from multiple sources.

If a title update fails despite meeting the visible limit, capture the ASIN, category, exact error and attempted value before opening a support case. Do not repeatedly change unrelated attributes in the hope that one submission will pass.

Measure the migration without claiming causation too early

Record a before-and-after baseline for each changed ASIN. Useful observations include:

  • search impressions and clicks for the same query groups;
  • click-through rate;
  • detail-page sessions or views;
  • ordered units and unit-session percentage where available;
  • advertising clicks, conversion and search-term mix;
  • suppressed or incomplete-listing status;
  • stock, price, promotion and fulfilment changes.

Use comparable periods and annotate events that could affect results. A title change made during a stock-out, price change or promotion cannot be evaluated cleanly. One ASIN or a few days of data is not enough to claim the title caused a ranking or conversion movement.

The purpose of the migration log is to separate three questions: did the listing comply, did shoppers find and understand it, and did the offer convert under comparable conditions? Those answers require different evidence.

Final Amazon title migration checklist

Before marking an ASIN complete, confirm that:

  • the product is in a non-media category covered by the 75-character update;
  • the title is 75 characters or fewer, including spaces;
  • the title identifies the exact product and variation;
  • Item Highlights stays within 125 characters and contains only verified details;
  • bullets, images, attributes and packaging agree with the new copy;
  • relevant search language is distributed naturally across allowed fields;
  • the original and revised values are recorded;
  • the live listing and change history have been checked;
  • performance will be reviewed over a defined, comparable period.

A shorter title should make the catalogue more precise, not merely smaller. Keep identity in the title, move secondary comparison information deliberately, and preserve a record of what changed so the next decision is based on evidence rather than memory.
